One day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's go over to the other side of the lake."

So they boarded a boat and sailed off, accompanied by some other boats. The typical Galilean fishing boat held about 15 adults. So, if some of the fishermen disciples were among the rowers, Jesus and his core group of disciples could have taken one boat. The other boats would have held others interested in this rabbi's teachings as well as enthusiastic people, some of whom had witnessed miracles, eager to see what was going on.

After they had been at sea for a while, a terrifying storm arose. Huge wind-whipped waves crashed over the boat, which began filling up with water. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion.

The men woke him up. "Rabbi!" they cried out. "Don't you care that we perish!"

Jesus, now awake, rebuked the wind and the raging sea. "Calm down!"

At that, there was a great calm.

Jesus said to his disciples, "Why were you afraid? Don't you have faith?"

But the men were even more frightened. "Who IS this, that even the wind and water obey him?"
Matthew 8:28-34; Mark 5:1-20; Luke 8:26-39; p83-86 3harm
On arriving on the southeastern bank of the lake (in the region with Gedara as the main town), Jesus walked ashore and immediately a demon-possessed man met him. He lived in the tombs because no one could keep him in chains or fetters, as he had demonic strength and repeatedly broke them. He was so dangerous and frightening, people could not even walk past the area he inhabited. He spent his time screaming and raging among the tombs, gashing his body on the rocks as he went.

When this man saw Jesus from afar, he ran up and bowed down low to him.

The man shouted, "What do I have to do with you, you son of the Most High? I beg you, please don't torment me!"

The parasite, perceiving that Jesus was about to expel it, was speaking through the mouth of its host.

Jesus asked the fiend, "What is your name?"[WYA1]

"The name is Legion, for we are many," came the reply.

On a nearby hillside a herd of hogs was feeding (showing that Jesus had landed in area settled by Gentiles, as pork was strictly forbidden to Jews as coming from "unclean" animals).

Knowing their time was at hand, the unclean spirits begged, "Please, send us into the hogs!"

Jesus agreed. The swarm of demons exited the man and landed in the hogs. Immediately, the entire herd of 2,000 animals bolted down the hillside into the lake, where they drowned. On witnessing that, the herdsmen fled to a nearby town and told everyone what happened.  Everybody hurried to the scene, where they found the demoniac now clothed and in his right mind.

The locals were alarmed and pleaded with Jesus to leave their territory, which he did. But first he spoke with the recovered man, who wanted to set sail with Jesus' party. But Jesus would not permit him.

"Go home and tell your friends the wonderful things Jehovah [WYA2] has done for you, and how merciful he was to you."

The man went through the Ten Cities and spread the message of the great things that Jesus had done for him.

Hence, not only did Jews of that region hear about what their God had done, but early in Jesus' ministry news of the Jewish God and of Jesus spread into the non-Jewish world, as that region had a mix of Jewish and Gentile residents. This shows that Jesus, while keeping to his role as messiah for the Jews, also was to convey God's mercy to the non-Jews.

Other points:
¶ We also observe that Jesus pointed to the God of Israel and the man then correctly pointed to Jesus.
¶ We discern that what were truly unclean were not the hogs,[WYA3] but the foul spirits. They were so unclean that not even hogs could tolerate them.
¶ We learn that whether the storm is external or the storm is internal, Jesus saves.
And we learn that, if we are trusting him, we should not fear such things. We must stop thinking like we did before we knew Jesus – when we were afraid of all the wrong things!

Matthew 9:18-26; Mark 5:21-43; Luke 8:40-56; 3harm p86-89
On their return to the North Shore, Jesus and his disciples were met by a large crowd. A synagogue director named Jairus approached and prostrated himself, imploring Jesus, "Please, sir, my little daughter is about to die. Please lay hands on her so that she may be healed."

So Jesus went with him, with a huge crowd following.

But as Jesus went, a very sick woman, who was afflicted with an unceasing flow of blood, came up behind him and touched his garment.

As soon as she did, she was healed of her affliction: the blood flow came to a halt.

"If I can just touch the hem of his garment," she had thought, "then I will be healed."

She had been afflicted with this disorder for many years, spending all her money on doctors, though she continually got worse.

Jesus turned around and said, "Who touched my clothing?"

The disciples were perplexed. "Rabbi, the crowd is pressing you all around and you ask, Who touched me?"

"I know someone touched me," Jesus said, "because I felt power go out of me."

Trembling with fear, the woman came forward and bowed low before him, telling him everything.

Jesus smiled. "Daughter, cheer up. Your faith has healed you. Go in peace. This affliction won't return."

Not long after, people from Jairus's house came up and told Jairus, "Your daughter has died. Why trouble the rabbi further?"

But Jesus did not heed that message, telling Jairus, "Don't be afraid. Just believe."

Jesus separated himself from the crowd and most of his disciples, telling them to stay back. The only people allowed to accompany Jesus and Jairus were Peter and the brothers James and John.

At the house, the funeral proceedings had begun, with noisy wailing and flute-playing.

"Why are you people weeping?" Jesus said, "The child isn't dead. She's asleep."

He added, "Everybody clear out."

Knowing that the girl was dead, the mourners laughed scornfully.

Once everybody was out of the house, he took Jairus and the girl's mother and the three disciples to the child's side.

Jesus took the child by the hand and said, "Little Precious, time to get up."

Immediately the girl, who was about 12, arose.

Everyone was astounded, but Jesus told them not to say what had happened.[WYA4]

"Give the girl a bite to eat," he said.
