One day, after Jesus had completed a time of prayer, a disciple pointed out that John had taught his students how to pray and that he wished to know Jesus' teaching on this subject.
Jesus replied, "When you pray, say,
"Suppose you go to a friend's house late one night and ask to borrow three loaves because company has arrived at your house and you have nothing to feed them. But from inside, your friend replies, 'Please don't bother me now. The door is barred and I am in bed with my children.' Yet, I tell you, though the man won't arise on behalf of friendship, he will respond to persistent pleading and will give you whatever you need."
In this vein, Jesus taught, "Ask, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. To the one who knocks, the door will open."
We, as his children, need not worry about asking the Father for gifts, Jesus taught.
"Which one of you dads, if his son asked for a loaf, would give him a stone? Or if he asked for a fish, would give him a snake?
"So if you, being mentally and spiritually unstable, know how to give your children good gifts, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask?"

Jesus replied, "When you pray, say,
Father, holy be your name.Jesus then taught them with an illustration:
Your kingdom come.
One day at a time,
give us our bread.
And forgive us our sins,
as we forgive everyone
who owes us anything.
Do not lead us to temptation.

The rabbi is here pointing out that prayer should be more than mouthing words. One should earnestly express himself to God concerning one's needs and wants. And keep at it, as long as necessary or as long as seems good.
In this vein, Jesus taught, "Ask, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. To the one who knocks, the door will open."

Jesus often couched his teachings in such a way that their full meaning would become apparent after his resurrection. Jesus' followers were already under the protection of God as their Father. They were already accepted as his children. But this status could not be consummated until Jesus had paid the penalty for all human sin on the cross and conquered Death. Then, Jehovah could send the Holy Spirit to common people who had put their trust in Jesus. Then, God Jehovah fully became their Father as they became sons of God, born anew in the Spirit.
